{"id":227,"date":"2018-02-10T14:26:10","date_gmt":"2018-02-10T14:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thehollyfest.org\/?page_id=227"},"modified":"2018-02-10T14:26:10","modified_gmt":"2018-02-10T14:26:10","slug":"juan-cole","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.thehollyfest.org\/index.php\/juan-cole\/","title":{"rendered":"Juan Cole"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Rubaiyat<\/h1>\n<p>Attributed to Omar Khayyam<br \/>\ntranslated by Juan Cole<\/p>\n<p>At dawn a shout<br \/>\nawoke us in<br \/>\nthat watering hole:<br \/>\n&#8216;You crazed<br \/>\ncarousing<br \/>\ndrunk!<br \/>\nGet up and grab that bottle;<br \/>\nlet\u2019s finish what we started<br \/>\nbefore fate starts to finish us.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, who brought you, drunk,<br \/>\nhere to me?<br \/>\nFrom behind the curtain,<br \/>\nwho brought you here?\u2014<br \/>\nto someone who was on fire<br \/>\nbecause you were gone\u2014<br \/>\nsomeone who, like the wind,<br \/>\nsought you everywhere!<br \/>\nWho brought you here?<\/p>\n<p>This world<br \/>\nthat was our home<br \/>\nfor a brief spell<br \/>\nnever brought us anything<br \/>\nbut pain and grief;<br \/>\nits a shame that not one of our problems<br \/>\nwas ever solved.<br \/>\nWe depart<br \/>\nwith a thousand regrets<br \/>\nin our hearts.<\/p>\n<p>Get up and come here<br \/>\nfor the sake of my heart,<br \/>\nand lend your beauty<br \/>\nto solving my problem.<br \/>\nBring an earthenware mug<br \/>\nfull of wine<br \/>\nfor us to drink,<br \/>\n\u2014quick before we&#8217;re clay<br \/>\nin the ground<br \/>\nthat they quarry<br \/>\nto make mugs.<\/p>\n<p>When I die,<br \/>\nprepare my body in wine<br \/>\nAnd in place of a eulogy,<br \/>\nlift a glass!<br \/>\nOn Resurrection Day<br \/>\nyou&#8217;ll find my dust<br \/>\nstirring beneath<br \/>\nthe threshold<br \/>\nof the bar<\/p>\n<p>Lovers are, all their lives,<br \/>\nfrantic and intoxicated\u2014<br \/>\ncrazy, distracted, \u00a0and disgraced.<br \/>\nWhen we&#8217;re sober, everything annoys us.<br \/>\nBut when we&#8217;re drunk,<br \/>\nwhatever will be,<br \/>\nwill be<\/p>\n<p>Although we partiers<br \/>\nmay have good color<br \/>\nand smell pleasant,<br \/>\nwith cheeks like rubies;<br \/>\nand though we&#8217;re tall as a cypress\u2014<br \/>\nit&#8217;s just not clear,<br \/>\nin this earthly cabaret,<br \/>\nwhy I was prettied up.<\/p>\n<p>Where&#8217;s the smoke<br \/>\nfrom my fire around here?<br \/>\nwhere&#8217;s the profit<br \/>\non my investment around here?<br \/>\nAs for the guy<br \/>\nwho called me a bar fly,<br \/>\nnow really, where&#8217;s the bar<br \/>\naround here?<\/p>\n<p>The idol asked the pagan,<br \/>\n&#8220;Do you know why<br \/>\nyou started bowing down to me?&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014&#8221;It was because the One<br \/>\nwho looks out through your eyes<br \/>\nshone his light on me!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for love,<br \/>\ntry to attract every heart.<br \/>\nIn the path<br \/>\nof the Presence,<br \/>\ntry to entice every seeker.<br \/>\nA hundred holy temples made<br \/>\nof water and clay<br \/>\nare not worth a single soul.<br \/>\nWhy make pilgrimage<br \/>\nto a shrine<br \/>\nwhen you can win a heart?<\/p>\n<p>From the house of unbelief<br \/>\nto true religion<br \/>\nis a single breath;<br \/>\nFrom the world of doubt<br \/>\nto certainty<br \/>\nis a single breath;<br \/>\nEnjoy this precious single breath,<br \/>\nfor the harvest of our whole lives<br \/>\nis that same one breath.<\/p>\n<p>That priceless ruby<br \/>\nis from another mine,<br \/>\nand that unique pearl<br \/>\nis from a different shop.<br \/>\nThinking about this and that<br \/>\nis just your imagination, and mine;<br \/>\nthe story of passionate love is<br \/>\nfrom a different tongue.<\/p>\n<p>Night and day<br \/>\npreceded you and me<br \/>\nThe vault of the sky<br \/>\nrevolved upon some work.<br \/>\nBe careful to tread lightly<br \/>\non the earth\u2014<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re walking on people<br \/>\nwho used to be someone&#8217;s<br \/>\nsweetheart.<\/p>\n<p>Pagan temples and mosques<br \/>\nare all houses of worship.<br \/>\nRinging church bells<br \/>\nare hymns of worship.<br \/>\nThe sacred thread of the Parsee,<br \/>\nthe synagogue, the rosary<br \/>\nand the crucifix\u2014<br \/>\nin reality, all<br \/>\nare tokens of<br \/>\nservitude to God<\/p>\n<p>On the tablet of fate<br \/>\nwas written<br \/>\nthe sign of all things.<br \/>\nIt is all the same to the<br \/>\npen whether it writes<br \/>\nthe good or the bad.<br \/>\nIn destiny, all that must be,<br \/>\nwas ordained.<br \/>\nHow absurd, to grieve or<br \/>\nstruggle against it!<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t reveal the mystery<br \/>\nto either saint or sinner;<br \/>\nI can&#8217;t say at length<br \/>\nwhat I&#8217;ve said curtly;<br \/>\nI achieve an altered state<br \/>\nthat I can&#8217;t explain;<br \/>\nI have a secret<br \/>\nthat I cannot share.<\/p>\n<p>Persian originals in.
