This vase from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston shows a worker placing a herm on top of a plinth. Alcibiades, along with his friends, was accused of having broken off the erect phalluses of the Herms ( = Desecration of the Herms] that were placed at street intersections in Athens. At the very least this act of vandalism was considered an irreligious act, but it could also have been considered a blow against Athenian democracy. The slide shows a vase depiction of a herm; one can easily see what the “Desecration” consisted of.
