Notes:

What I’m proposing is that this partially finished temple was part of the same scam, by which the Athenian delegation of 416 had been duped into thinking that Segesta was wealthy enough to finance the Athenian expedition to Sicily. The envoys had also been fooled by a building project which made the Segestans seem more Greek than barbarian. This was not a full-fledged, authentic Greek temple, but a kind of a Potemkin Temple, one which was meant to display a wealth and identity that the Segestans never really had.
